A cheap trip starts with the flight, because the airfare decides whether a destination fits a budget before a single meal is eaten. This guide ranks places inside the US and abroad, by what they cost per day and what the journey costs from JFK, LAX, ORD, Houston and Miami.
Every place below carries a daily budget, the cheapest months to go, the carriers that fly there and what a US passport needs at the border. Itemized costs, safety notes and a solo, couple and family cost table for each place sit in the practical notes at the bottom.
The Real Price of a Cheap Trip
A country that costs $30 a day with a $1,500 fare is dearer than a city at $90 a day reached on a $200 fare. Add the airfare to the days of spending and divide by the length of the trip to find the true daily cost of any destination.
Vietnam at a $1,150 fare and $40 a day costs $204 a day over seven days and $122 a day over fourteen. It overtakes a trip to Memphis after 15 days and a trip to Oaxaca after 37 days, so a short holiday belongs closer to home.
The hub hop cuts long haul fares: fly one big route to a gateway such as Istanbul, Doha or Mexico City, then add a short flight on Wizz Air, Pegasus or Volaris. Two cheap tickets total less than one through fare on many routes.
The lesser known names on this list pay back that effort: Albania, Georgia, Armenia, Bulgaria, Laos and Bolivia cost less per day than the usual picks, and Kolkata, Nepal and Sri Lanka stretch a budget further than most of Southeast Asia. Four of the 20 international places sit within a short flight of Houston or Miami.
Travel in the first and last weeks of a shoulder season, when hotels have dropped rates and the weather has not yet turned. The months listed for each place sit on the dry side of the local rain calendar.
Why These Places and How Cheap Was Measured
Out of hundreds of destinations, each place passed five filters: entry for US passport holders with no visa or a visa under $50, a round trip fare from a major US hub with a midpoint under $1,500, a budget daily cost at or under $130 in the US and $70 abroad, working lodging, food and transport for a first time visitor, and a type of trip the rest of the list does not offer.
The list then balances geography, with ten places inside the US and twenty across five regions abroad, so it never turns into a Southeast Asia list. Places that sit on the competing lists, such as Bali and Chiang Mai, appear here beside a cheaper neighbor or companion city.
The cheapness factor is the budget daily cost: one night in a dorm, guesthouse or budget hotel, three local meals, local transport and one paid entry, priced at the budget option in that place. The second factor is the effective daily cost, which spreads the round trip fare over the days of the trip.
Midrange and luxury figures in the cost tables multiply the budget figure by fixed factors for room quality and sit down meals in each region. The factors are 2.25 and 5.5 abroad and 1.6 and 3.2 in the US, and couples and families scale from the solo figure.

Walk Old Town Plaza at no cost, then drive to Petroglyph National Monument where thousands of carved images cover the lava rock above the city. Sunset from the Sandia foothills trailheads is free, while the tramway ticket is the one splurge to skip on a tight budget.
Motels along old Route 66 on Central Avenue run $65 to $90 a night, and many keep their vintage neon signs glowing after dark. A realistic daily budget is $110 with a rental car, and the lowest rates arrive in January and February before the October balloon fiesta crowds.

Hidden Costs and Local Money Rules
Visas and entry fees
Vietnam and Egypt charge $25 for the visa, Cambodia charges $30 on arrival, and Indonesia adds a 150,000 rupiah Bali levy. Albania, Georgia, Armenia, Guatemala and Bolivia charge nothing, and Sri Lanka waived its ETA fee in May 2026.
Dual pricing
Foreign visitors pay several times the resident price at Giza, Sigiriya, Borobudur and the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. Keep a sightseeing fund apart from the daily budget so one monument does not drain it.
Street food or cooking
In Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Oaxaca and Cairo a stall meal costs less than groceries, so skip the apartment kitchen there. In the ten US places a restaurant meal runs $20 to $35, so a kitchen and groceries keep the budget.
Secondary city swaps
Choose Nan over Chiang Mai, Bacalar or Valladolid over Tulum, Mostar over Dubrovnik and Taos over Aspen for the same culture at lower lodging prices. This guide applies the same idea with Nan beside Chiang Mai and Plovdiv beside Sofia.
ATMs and cards
Decline the currency conversion at independent ATMs such as Euronet, which adds 10 to 18 percent, and withdraw from bank branch machines. Carry cash in Nepal, Laos, Cambodia, Egypt and Bolivia, and set up UPI One World before Kolkata.
Ride apps to install before landing
Grab and InDrive cover Southeast Asia, DiDi, Cabify and InDrive cover Latin America, Uber and Careem cover Egypt, and Bolt covers Bulgaria, Romania, Albania and Georgia. Install them at home to skip the airport taxi rank.
Secondary airports
Budget carriers land at airports such as Paris Beauvais, Frankfurt Hahn and London Stansted, where a $18 to $25 shuttle doubles a $25 fare. Compare against rail linked airports such as Chicago O Hare, which costs under $3 into town.
Carry on and water costs
VietJet, AirAsia and Scoot weigh carry ons at the gate against a 7 kg limit, and 1 to 2 kg over costs $40 to $70. A filter bottle replaces $3 to $6 a day of bottled water in Southeast Asia, Latin America and Egypt and pays for itself in 10 to 14 days.
Micro seasons
The burning season from February to April hazes northern Thailand and Laos, and sargassum seaweed fouls Dominican east coast beaches from late spring to summer. Check the AirNow index before booking the Black Hills in August and September.
How to Cut Costs
Flights
Set fare alerts, fly midweek, and split a long haul into a gateway flight to Istanbul, Doha or Mexico City plus a short budget hop on Wizz Air, Pegasus or Volaris. Domestic fares drop on Southwest, Frontier, Breeze and Allegiant.
Stays
Guesthouses and private hostel rooms cost a third of a hotel, and a unit that lists no resort fee saves $25 to $40 a night in US beach towns. Two dorm beds cost $70 to $100 in US and western European hubs, so couples book a private double instead.
Local transport
Use metros, night trains, minibuses and the free Kansas City streetcar before taxis. Sleeper trains and night buses on routes such as Hanoi to Da Nang, La Paz to Uyuni and Cairo to Luxor replace a night of lodging.
Food
Eat the big meal at lunch from a set menu or a market stall, which runs $2 to $5 abroad and under $10 in the US. Walk 500 meters from the main landmark, since prices within two blocks of it run 100 to 300 percent higher.
SIMs and data
An eSIM costs $5 to $15 for a week in most countries on this list, against $10 a day on US carrier roaming plans. Install it before landing.
Shoulder season rule
Hotel rates fall 30 to 50 percent in the months named for each place without bringing the rains. Book the first or last two weeks of each window for the best price and weather.
Free and low cost days
Beale Street, the River Walk, the Alamo, the Nelson Atkins Museum, Mount Rushmore, Rila Monastery and public beaches in Gulf Shores charge no entry. Museums on Us gives Bank of America cardholders free entry to partner museums on the first weekend of each month.
